The Friuli Islands
A limestone silhouette off the coast of Marseille, the Frioul archipelago is composed of four islands: Pomègues and Ratonneau, If and Tiboulen. The assertive character of the islands and their tormented relief drawn by the mistral wind testify to their distant history, since in the quaternary period they were attached to the mainland and from the 6th century BC their history begins with that of Massalia.
The arid microclimate of the site generates original floral species. In total, 200 species of plants can be observed, some of which are protected. These islands are also a refuge for many marine birds. They are, among others, the domain of predilection of the gull, the “gabian” of the Provençals.
The island of Frioul offers many creeks, beaches and sandy coves: the Maison des Pilotes (sand), the Havre de Morgiret (pebbles and rocks), the calanque de Saint Estève (sand), the beach of the landing stage (pebbles).
The Archipelago of Frioul has been owned by the City of Marseille since 1971. The village of Port Frioul was created in 1974: it has a few restaurants, a marina with a capacity of 700 moorings and welcomes many boaters. The aquaculture farm, located on the island of Pomègues, raising sea bass has been recognized as the first organic farm in the world.
The archipelago is part of the Calanques National Park and is a still preserved place, an authentic encounter in the Mediterranean.
