Blois cultivates its art of living in the present
Let’s face it, life is good in Blois!
Blois is a city on a human scale with a population of 50,000 (107,000 for the entire urban area). It is a city with a gentle lifestyle, a dynamic economy and university, and a rich community, cultural and sporting life. With an exceptional natural and architectural environment along the Loire, the city of Blois is crossed by the river, which places it at the heart of the perimeter classified for ten years as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO as a “cultural landscape”. It plays a balancing role between Orleans and Tours and has much to be proud of.
Royal CastleView large imageThe greatest tourist and heritage pride of its inhabitants is its Royal Castle, which overlooks the streets of the old center. The Royal Castle of Blois is the ideal introduction to the Loire Valley as it represents the synthesis of the architecture and history of the Loire castles. Its courtyard offers a true panorama of French architecture from the Middle Ages to the 17th century. Residence of 7 kings and 10 queens of France, it is a place evocative of the power and daily life of the Court during the Renaissance as evidenced by the royal apartments richly furnished and decorated with magnificent polychrome decorations.
In 1845, it was one of the first historical monuments to be restored and served as a model for the restoration of many other castles. The Royal Castle of Blois, labeled as a Museum of France, with more than 30,000 works, presents part of its collections in the royal apartments of the François I wing, in the Fine Arts museum installed in the Louis XII wing, but also during its numerous temporary exhibitions.
