Initially a simple castle protecting the navigation on the Garonne, the city was truly founded by Richard the Lionheart in 1182, when the Duke of Aquitaine and future King of England granted the inhabitants a charter of customs and privileges. During the five centuries that followed, Marmande was at the heart of the turmoil of history. The crusade against the Cathars, the Hundred Years War, the Plague and the Wars of Religion hit the city hard. Despite this tortuous past, the city has managed to preserve the vestiges of a history that is almost a thousand years old.
