[tab title=”Situation”]
Located in Haute-Garonne, 34 kms north-east of Toulouse, this commune is bordered by the river Tarn and the departments of Tarn-et-Garonne.
Villemur is a town of 5,758 inhabitants. The name Villemur refers in the 11th century to the place where the town was originally anchored, the Villa Muro (villa: habitat, the city) + wall (surrounded by walls and ditches) facing the Tarn.
Its inhabitants are the villemuriens and villemuriennes.
This city with its medieval structures, its narrow and tortuous streets, its alleys, is squeezed between the river and the hillside. From its prestigious past it keeps its historical monuments: the Tower of Defense, masterpiece of military architecture of the XIIth century classified as Historical Monument, the Granaries of the King dating from the XVIIth century and registered in the Inventory of the Historical Monuments and the admirable frescos of the painter from Toulouse Bénézet in the choir of the Church Saint-Michel (XIXth century).
Places and monuments to discover:
– Defense Tower,
– Greniers du Roy,
– Church of Saint Michael,
– Former Brusson factory.
